The Jakarta Fair / Pekan Raya Jakarta (PRJ) was held for the first time in the Monas area from 5 June to 20 July 1968 and was opened by President Suharto by releasing a carrier pigeon. The first PRJ was called DF which stands for Djakarta Fair (Old Spelling). Gradually the spelling changed to Jakarta Fair which was later more popularly known as Pekan Raya Jakarta.
The idea emerged or was initiated for the first time by Syamsudin Mangan, better known as Haji Mangan at that time serving as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). He proposed a large exhibition event to increase the marketing of domestic production.
Which at that time was starting to rise after the G30S/ 1965 to the Governor of DKI which was held by Ali Sadikin or better known by Bang Ali in 1967. This idea or idea was welcomed by the DKI Government. Because the DKI Government also wanted to make a large centralized exhibition and lasted for a long time as an effort to realize The desire of the DKI Government to unite various “night markets” which at that time were still spreading in several areas of Jakarta. Such as the Gambir Night Market which every year took place at the former Ikada Field (now the Monas area), was also the inspiration for the Exhibition which was claimed to be the this “Biggest Exhibition”.
The Idea of Pekan Raya Jakarta
Haji Mangan was inspired by various international exhibition events that he often participated in as a conglomerate in the textile sector at that time and the Gambir Night Market which had been busy from the past.
This idea was welcomed by the DKI Government by making a breakthrough by directly forming a temporary committee which was entrusted to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) whose chairman was Haji Mangan.
To make it more legitimate or official, the DKI Government issued Regional Regulation (Perda) no. 8 of 1968 which among other things stipulates that Pekan Raya Jakarta will become an annual fixed agenda and is held ahead of Jakarta’s Birthday which is celebrated every June 22.
A foundation named the Jakarta Exhibition and Fair Organizing Foundation was also formed as the managing body of PRJ.
According to Regional Regulation no. 8/1968, the task of this foundation is not only to organize PRJ but also to organize the Jakarta Promotion and Entertainment Arena (APHJ) which is scheduled to take place throughout the year.
